Travel to the USA

A: 야~너 얼마 전에 미국 갔다 왔다며?

A: Hey, I heard you recently went to the United States?

B: 응, 패키지 투어로 갔다 왔어.

B: Yeah, I went on a package tour.

A: 어땠어?

A: How was it?

B: 전체적으론 좋았어, 다른 문화를 경험할 수 있다는 점에서. 그런데 패키지 투어는 장점과 단점이 있더라.

B: Overall, it was good, especially in experiencing different cultures. But package tours have their pros and cons.

A: 어떤 점들이 있는데?

A: What are some of them?

B: 먼저, 장점은 매우 효율적이고 경제적이라는 거야. 내가 개인적으로 미국을 가려고 하면, 모든 투어와 교통을 예약해야 하잖아. 그런데 투어회사에서는 그룹으로 예약해서 같이 다니니까 훨씬 비용이 적게 들지. 

그리고 여행 일정이 매우 잘 계획되어져 있어서 그 넓은 미국 지역을 시간 낭비 없이 돌아 볼 수 있었어. 혼자 다니면 교통 수단 알아보고 짐 들고 우왕좌왕 하면서 체력도 힘들고 시간도 더 많이 들게 되잖아.

그런데 단점은 자유가 없다는 거야. 내가 가고 싶은 레스토랑이나 가게들을 가볼 수가 없어. 그리고 관광지에서도 항상 시간 제한이 있어서 바쁘게 뛰어다니면서 구경해야 돼.

B: First, the advantage is that it's very efficient and economical. If I were to go to the U.S. individually, I'd have to book all the tours and transportation. However, with a tour company, we made group reservations, and it turned out to be much cheaper. 

 Also, the travel itinerary was well-planned, allowing us to cover a vast area of the U.S. without wasting time. When traveling alone, you have to figure out transportation, carry your luggage, which is physically demanding and time-consuming.

 But the downside is the lack of freedom. I couldn't visit the restaurants or shops I wanted to, and there was always a time limit at tourist attractions, making it necessary to rush through everything.

A: 미국에서는 어디 갔었어?

A: Where did you go in the U.S.?

B: LA, 샌프란시스코, 라스베가스 그리고 그랜드 캐년 갔다왔어.

B: I visited LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon.

A: 어디가 제일 좋았어?

A: Which place did you like the most?

B: 난 샌프란시스코 분위기가 제일 좋더라. 다른 도시 보다는 한적하고 여유로운 느낌이었어. 물론 거기도 거리에 텐트 치고 사는 노숙자들은 있지만...

B: I enjoyed the atmosphere in San Francisco the most. It was more serene and relaxed compared to other cities. Of course, there were still homeless people camping on the streets there...

A: 샌프란시스코에서는 뭐했어?

A: What did you do in San Francisco?

B: 언덕 전망대에 가서 도시 전망도 보고 항구쪽 가서 가게, 마켓들 구경했어. 유명한 클램 차우더도 맛보고 유람선 타고 금문교, 알카트라즈 감옥섬도 구경했어.

B: I went to the hilltop viewpoints to see the city view and explored the shops and markets near the harbor. I tried the famous clam chowder, took a boat tour to see the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

A: 와~엄청 좋았겠다. 힘든 점은 없었어?

A: Wow, that sounds amazing. Were there any challenges?

B: 매일 새벽 4~5시에 일어나서 출발해야 하는게 힘들었어. 그리고 첫 날에는 LA공항으로 10시간 비행 후 바로 관광이 시작되서 진짜 너무 피곤해서 죽는 줄 알았어. 그냥 빨리 호텔가서 쉬고 싶더라.

B: Waking up at 4-5 am every day to start the tours was challenging. And on the first day, we started sightseeing/Tour started right after 10-hour flight to LA airport, thus I was so tired to death. I just wanted to go to the hotel and take a rest as soon as possible.

A: 장시간 비행하고 바로 관광하려면 힘들었겠다. 여행하면서 좋았던 것 뭐야?

A: It must have been tough to start sightseeing/tour right after a long flight. What was the best part of your trip?

B: 아주 짧고 적은 기회였지만 영어를 써볼 수 있었다는 게 좋았어.

B: It was great that I could speak in English, even though it was a short and limited opportunity.

A: 오~ 영어로 뭐 얘기했어?

A: Oh, really? What did you talk about in English?

B: 스타벅스 가서 커스텀 메뉴도 주문해 보고 마트에서 어떤 아줌마랑도 잠깐 대화 해봤어. 그리고 유니버셜스튜디오에서 놀이기구 타려고 줄 기다리는데 앞에 있던 사람이랑 스몰토크도 했어.  그 사람이랑은 어디서 왔는지, 여행 중인지, 언제 돌아가는지 이런 얘기들 나눴어.

B: I ordered a customized menu at Starbucks, had a brief conversation with an older lady at the grocery store, and had small talk with someone in front of me while waiting in line for a ride at Universal Studios. We talked about where you are from, if you are now traveling, and when you plan to return.

A: 마지막으로, 미국 여행하면서 느낀 점이 있다면 뭐야?

A: That's cool! Lastly, any overall impressions from your trip to the U.S.?/What are your overall impressions of your trip to the U.S.?

B: 세상은 참 넓고 사람들은 다양하다는 거야. 한국에서만 그리고 거기서도 계속 직장과 집만 왔다 갔다 하다보면 나도 모르게 시야가 좁아지고 한정된 생각만 하기 쉬운데 밖에 나가서 경험을 해보면 생각의 판이 커지는 느낌이랄까? 그런 게 좋았어.

B: The world is truly vast, and people are so diverse. If you keep going back and forth between work and home only in Korea, unintentionally, your perspective can become narrow and your thoughts limited. Going outside and experiencing more makes your mental horizon wider/If you go outside and experience more, you mental horizons will get wider, and I liked that feeling.

A: 오~난 네 이야기만으로도 시야가 넓어지는 느낌이다!

A: Oh, just hearing your story makes me feel like my perspective is broadening!
